The Apprentice winner Marnie Swindells has revealed a very mischievous joke she made to Lord Alan Sugar in the boardroom which didn’t make the cut… and left him looking less than amused.

Last night, it was announced that Marnie would be receiving Lord Sugar’s £250,000 investment for her business, a boxing gym, which she has now named BRONX, that aims to draw people in with its community feel and swish aesthetic.

After being told over the phone that she had won the 2023 BBC competition, the entrepreneur spoke to Metro.co.uk about her experience throughout the programme.

One standout memory was in the episode of the immersive experience task, when she took on the persona of a teacher in a Victorian classroom.

As viewers may remember (it’s pretty hard to forget), Marnie ended up spanking her Apprentice co-star Avi Sharma as their guests watched in astonishment, dubbing him a ‘bad boy’.

Recalling the ‘amazing’ and ‘unforgettable’ moments she had on the show, the winner added that there was one particular interaction she had with Lord Sugar about her invented character that ‘didn’t make the edit’.

‘I did say in the boardroom to Lord Sugar, “I’m a lady and I’m still looking for a lord,”’ she confessed.

‘The candidates burst out laughing straight away. Lord Sugar looks a bit more straight-faced so I swiftly moved on.’

It sounds like the business magnate didn’t take too warmly to the cheeky joke.

Lord Sugar’s questioning of Avi over the spanking moment did make it into the final episode, as he asked in the boardroom: ‘You started off in a school-teacher manner, demonstrating how you get the cane if you’re a naughty boy, is that right?’

‘Yes Lord Sugar you’re right, I did receive a whipping,’ Avi responded.

Baroness Karren Brady then asked: ‘Did you enjoy it?’

‘I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it,’ the Apprentice contestant admitted, sparking laughter in the room. ‘I think what was most important was the guests found it very entertaining.’

Lord Sugar chimed in to add: ‘I would have, watching you getting whacked!’

After her victory, Marnie shared with Metro.co.uk that she didn’t actually think that she’d won until she received a phone call from Lord Sugar confirming the result.

‘Lord Sugar does let us know after who he decides to go with, so it was difficult and we were left in suspense for a little while. I really didn’t think that it was going my way,’ she said.

‘I remember that morning that we found out thinking, “Just put me out of my misery. I know I didn’t win.” Then he gave me the shock of my life and said I had, so I also had to process that and try and deal with that feeling that I’d had that I hadn’t, and then I had, and it was a lot.’

The Apprentice is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
