Last week, the Mpavillion 10 was officially unveiled, marking the completion of renowned architect, Tadao Ando’s first-ever project in Australia. Earlier this year, the digital renderings for the pavilion’s design were revealed, offering a glimpse into the dynamic architectural site that’s amidst Melbourne’s garden oasis.
Positioned in the Queen Victoria Gardens, the city’s cultural and botanic garden precinct, the MPavillion 10 stars a large canopy that’s incorporated with an aluminum-fitted disc on its central column. Surrounding the site are concrete walls that help to partially enclose the space, allowing visitors to indulge in a moment of tranquility without being completely segregated from the park.
Speaking on this project, Tadao Ando expresses his delight and excitement in creating the Mpavillion 10, citing that it’s “a piece of living architecture that will have such an important role in the cultural life of Melbourne this summer.” Through this piece, he hopes for visitors to “allow this space to enter their hearts, and allow their senses to tune into the light and breeze interacting with them and this space,” and that he wishes them “an experience of harmony with nature, with themselves, and with others.”
MPavilion Commissioner, Naomi Milgrom AC notes that “Tadao Ando has designed a new, iconic destination in Melbourne, one that will serve as both a contemplative spot, a temporary refuge from the bustle of the city, and as a dynamic site for creative discovery and vigorous discussion for those attending our public program.”
