Brits risk £5k fine for taking off jumpers and cardigans while behind the wheel

Did you know you could risk yourself a hefty fine for trying to take off a jacket while driving?

Experts at Marmalade Insurance have warned drivers to be careful this summer if they're not wary of these rules.

They said removing clothes while behind the wheel could seriously impact your ability to focus on the road.

Taking off jumpers and cardigans will cause motorists to take their hands off the wheel which could lose sight of the streets.

According to the Highway Code, drivers should always wear appropriate clothing and footwear when driving.

They say clothing must not prevent the driver from using the controls in the correct manner.

Drivers who are seen distracted could be hit with a £100 fine on the spot.

But fees can dramatically rise in more serious cases with fines of up to £2,500 and £5,000 possible.

Alongside a fine, Brits could be stung with penalty points or a possible driving ban too.

And leaving thick clothes on while it's hot outside can cause problems for road users.

The Highway Code states drivers should keep their vehicles ventilated at all times to avoid becoming drowsy.

This is so it doesn't reduce a person's ability to concentrate on the road which could lead to accidents.

Crispin Monger, CEO of Marmalade, said: "With the long summer ahead, people will generally be spending a lot more time on the roads, travelling to their staycations or visiting family and friends.

"We thought it would be handy for new drivers of the UK to have this guide to hand should they need it. It offers some real pearls of wisdom from the team and should help new drivers be safer on the roads."

He added: "Most new drivers haven't had the best time over the last six months and many will be wanting to experience the freedom of being on the road and making sure that they can do that safely is a real focus for us."

Meanwhile, drivers could be hit with penalties based on the type of clothing they wear behind the wheel.

Alistair Grier, Director of Car Money, warned clothing was also likely to affect your car insurance costs.

He said: "The price of your car insurance is also going to increase dramatically if you are involved in a car accident and you were behind the wheel in inappropriate clothing that forced you to drive carelessly."
