Heavy periods are making my life hell and I don't know what to do

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M 14 and have really heavy periods that are making my life hell. It’s been like this since I started two years ago.

When I’m at school, the flow is so heavy that I’m terrified I will leak through my clothes and other people will notice.

I get horrible cramps and sometimes feel so weak from loss of blood that I can’t do anything except lie down, so I’ve missed lots of school.

My friends don’t understand – they think I’m exaggerating.

I dread my period every month.

DEIDRE SAYS: It is awful living with heavy period pain. You need to go to your doctor to rule out any medical conditions.

You can also ask for treatment – the Pill or other medication can help – and you may need to be referred to a gynaecologist for further investigation.

Please ask your mum to take you.
