How to properly clean wooden spoons

Everybody has a wooden spoon in their kitchen, but do you know how clean they are?

Even putting them in the dishwasher won’t remove ingrained dirt and bacteria, even if it’s not immediately visible.

Last year, one mum shared her hack for cleaning wooden spoons on Facebook, using boiling water to reveal the gunk that lies beneath.

It’s super easy to use this technique to clean your spoons, and all you’ll need it some water and a jar.

Simply place your spoon in the jar, and pour over freshly-boiled water.

Give it a stir and leave for at least 20 minutes, and you’ll see the oils and food particles draw out from the wood grain and into the water.

Do this regularly before towel-drying, and your spoons should stay clean.

If you’ve been cooking with spices like turmeric, and have stains or smells that just won’t go away, there are a few extra tricks you can use for a clean spoon.

The first uses salt and lemon. Cut your lemon in half and dip into a plate or bowl of coarse salt. Rub the salted lemon onto the stain, scrubbing until the stain lifts.

Baking soda and lemon juice is another concoction that should scrub away that orange hue.

Alternatively, you could add white vinegar to your boiling water and leave overnight to pull those stains right out.

The best thing to do after rinsing and drying your spoons is to leave them to dry in sunlight. Not only does the sun go some way to sanitising the utensil, it also somewhat bleaches stains and finishes off your cleaning process.
