I'm a property expert – freeze your sheets and five more ways to keep your house cool in a heatwave | The Sun

BRITAIN is set to bathe in a scorching heatwave this week with temperatures expected to reach 33C.

The Met Office has also issued a rare ‘extreme heat warning’ as temperatures have begun to rise.

Whilst the UK basks in the sunshine it’s important that we keep cool, especially with the new heat warning.

A property expert on TikTok has shared his tips on keeping cool, and they could save you a few pennies too.

Kyle Mattison shares videos as That Property Guy ranging from what to look out for on a house viewing to how to keep warm in winter.

But when it comes to keeping cool in a heatwave, her are his tips you should start using today.

Close your windows, draw your blinds

Every night we draw our blinds or curtains to stop direct sunlight from entering our room and waking us up during the early morning hours.

However, Kyle suggests that rather than opening them up again in the morning, we should actually keep our windows closed and our blinds drawn.

Keeping the curtains or blinds drawn will stop the sun light from entering each room and heating it up. Instead it will be blocked out and our rooms will remain cool.

Similarly, if we keep our windows closed then the hot air cannot enter our room and heat up the room.

Water and ice bowl

Find a small bowl, fill it up with water and add a few ice cubes.

Place the bowl in front of a fan and turn it on.

This simple tip will help keep your room cooler but circulating the cold air produced by the water and ice.

Fans are great tools to keep your room cool but can often circulate warm air around a room, rather than cool it down.

This trick ensures the air being circulated is cool and refreshing.

If you don't own a fan and are unsure which one is best to buy then check out The Sun writer Lynsey Hope's fan test where she tells you which fan is best for keeping you cool during the summer.

Create air flow

If you have to open your windows to cool down your home, make sure you open more than one.

This will create an air flow in your home and allow for circulation.

It’ll mean your home will keep cool or stay at one temperature rather than heat up like a microwave.

Use your oven less

Cooking is an essential part of our day. We eat three meals a day and often use the oven for two of those meals.

However, during these tasks you may be heating up your home more through using your oven.

Ovens generate a lot of heat so during the warmer days it may be ideal to avoid using one.

Instead, if you have a BBQ try and use that. You can cook a delicious meal outside without worrying about heating up your home.

Get rid of your duvet

Your duvet may be comfortable and snug but during the summer it will probably cause you to be hot and sweaty in bed.

It’s not hygienic and it stops you from sleeping.

It may be time to remove the duvet and keep it in storage until the colder months.

Instead, just sleep with your bedsheets. It’ll be much cooler and more comfortable for you.

Freeze the sheets

If removing your duvet doesn’t keep you cool enough, there may be another trick you can try.

Remove your sheets from your bed and put them in the freezer.

This will dramatically cool down your sheets and your temperature at night as you’re trying to fall asleep.

Replace light bulbs

If you have Halogen light bulbs then it may be time to consider replacing them with LEDs.

LED light bulbs produce less heat and therefore won’t heat up your house like a sauna.

LED light bulbs are also cheaper and will save energy as well so this tip can save you a few spare pennies.

The Sun also wrote these tips to cut the cost of your energy bills. You can read the article here.

Turn off appliances that aren’t being used

This tip is simple but will save you money on your bills as well as reducing the heat being produced in your home.

If an appliance isn’t in use then make sure it’s turned off.

This will create less heat and may cool your own temper as well.
