I'm really worried about going back to work at the office in the New Year

DEAR DEIDRE: I AM scared to go back to work at the office in the New Year but I can’t stay at home for ever.

I’m a man of 52 and an administrator at an insurance firm. I’ve been there for more than 20 years, but was told to work from home when the pandemic hit because I’ve got underlying health problems.

Most of my workmates have gone back to the office now and I know I’ll have to return too. But I’m dreading it.

I live with depression, which hasn’t helped, but I’ve enjoyed just being at home with my cat.

Yes, I understand there are safety measures in place but I’d rather stay home. I’m too young to retire, though.

DEIDRE SAYS: If you working from home is as efficient as being in the office, talk to your line manager.

Can the firm arrange a phased return, going in half-days or perhaps part-week at first?

If it isn’t co-operative, then get advice on your employment rights at Acas (acas.org.uk, 0300 123 1100).
