From a cheap and eco-friendlier way to travel, to the fact you cram in so many places in such a short time, there are so many reasons why people choose interrailing as a summer holiday.
In fact, more than 600,000 Interrail tickets were sold last year.
If you’re planning your route for an upcoming trip, new research has shed light on some of the must-visit spots.
Hybrid hospitality brand The Social Hub has analysed 40 of the best-rated cities in Europe looking at numerous factors – from safety to cost of living– to see what various destinations offer.
Top of the list is Madrid, which has been named the best interrailing hotspot in Europe, followed by Prague in second and Lisbon in third.
You certainly won’t be short of things to do in Madrid with 201 different activities on offer and 42 free walking tours, as well as reasonably-priced food and drink. Solo travellers also needn’t worry as the city has a safety score of 72 out of 100.
Likewise, Prague boasts 376 different activities and its top attractions have an average rating of 4.54 out of five. It’s also one of the safest cities analysed, with a score of 75.2.
Lisbon scooped third on the list, due to its affordability, alongside the fact there are 34 free walking tours to choose from in the Portuguese capital.
The data also found that Rome is the cheapest city to enjoy coffee with the average price of a cappuccino costing £1.34 – while Istanbul is the cheapest overall for travellers. What’s more, a meal for two costs just £13.36 on average per person in Istanbul – and a one-way transport ticket costs just £0.41.
Budapest rounds off the top five, offering cheap meals for two (£37.69/ €43.34) and public transport at just £0.82/ €0.94 for a one-way ticket.
