M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller, “Old,” topped the Box Office weekend in its debut despite a panning from critics and viewers — bringing in $16.5 million and beating out big-budget competitors “Snake Eyes” and “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”
The relatively low-budget $18 million flick delivered a surprise upset when it managed to edge out GI Joe-inspired “Snake Eyes,” which reportedly cost $88 million to produce.
“Old” is now Shyamalan’s third movie in a row to claim the top box-office spot, following his 2016 film “Split” and 2019 picture “Glass.”
But the thriller — about a beautiful, secluded beach which causes holidaymakers to age rapidly — also earned the title of Shyamalan’s lowest-grossing weekend No. 1 since the release of his breakthrough film “The Sixth Sense” in 1999, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
Shyamalan’s movies have grossed more than $3 billion globally.
“Old” is also now the lowest-grossing film to debut at number 1 in July since 1996, Rotten Tomatoes said — excluding last year when theaters were largely closed across the country amid the pandemic.
It was a muted weekend overall for movie theaters, according to the review website, as fears over rising COVID-19 cases and the convenience of at-home streaming took its toll.
Still, the film’s relative financial success in its first weekend didn’t help with reviews.
“Old” has a 51 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and got a C+ CinemaScore.
Vox deemed it “a floppy but haunting thriller.”
Meanwhile, viewers also took to social media to poke fun at the whole premise of the film — which reduces a person’s lifetime to a single day.
“Every beach is the beach that makes you old sun is terrible for your skin,” one Twitter user quipped.
“hi yes bartender i would love one sex on the beach that makes you old,” another joked.
