Mum shares easy chemical-free cupboard deodoriser you can make at home

Those of us who like our homes to smell fresh will know what it’s like to go to the supermarket for bread and come out with a handful of air freshening products that cost us a bomb.

Not only that, but with many home deodorising products there can be a whole host of chemicals which – while not inherently bad – some people don’t want wafting around.

An Australian mum has posted her own tip to make your wardrobes and cupboards smell beautiful without the added expense and chemicals – and the best part is how easy it is.

Parenting blogger Mama Mila shared her ‘recipe’ on TikTok with the caption ‘Try this one out for your shoe closet.’

In the video, the mum-of-two gets a mason jar with holes in the lid and adds a cup of uncooked rice.

From there, she puts in 10 drops of essential oil and pops the lid back on before giving it a shake. It’s as easy as that.

Mila, who lives in Melbourne, says the scent should last about ‘four to six months’ depending on the area you leave it, but that the rice acts as a natural odour absorber while the oils add an extra scent boost.

With this one it’s best to keep the jar away from kids and pets just to ensure they don’t eat or inhale any small bits.

You can also give the jar a little shake every so often to reinvigorate the smell.

The video now has over 5,000 likes, with comments pouring in from fellow house-proud hack-lovers saying things like ‘I will definitely try this,’ and ‘Omg this is amazing! Thanks for sharing!’

We’re big fan’s of Mama Mila’s tips here, and have previously written about her game-changing way to get tile grout sparkling clean.

Her recipe for super-soft towels that never go scratchy is also a big hit.
