My girlfriend's parents told her to break up with me because of my job

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN my girlfriend’s parents found out I don’t have a proper job, they told her to break up with me.

I’m 34 and trying to make it as an artist. I supplement my income with odd jobs, like DIY.

I’ve been with my girlfriend, who is 30, for two years and we were planning to move in together.

Now her parents have called me a work-shy loser and told her she’ll have a miserable life with me.

She’s always been supportive of my art, and says she loves my creativity. She isn’t materialistic, but does care what her parents think.

We’ve been arguing about it and she now says I should find a regular job if we’re to have a future.

I don’t know what to do.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your relationship is with your girlfriend, not her parents.

But perhaps they’ve confirmed some of her fears about your future together. You need to decide whether your art is more important to you than she is.

Talk to her. Maybe there’s a compromise solution – a part-time job or a deadline after which you’ll look for employment.
