OAP couple who met in sheltered housing after losing their partners tie the knot

An elderly couple who met in sheltered housing after their partners had died have tied the knot – and say they bonded over a jigsaw puzzle.

Rachel Monger, 80, and Joe Williams, 84, are proving that it’s never too late to find true love after they decided to get married after just three months of ‘courting’.

The pair met at Manor House in Bromborough, Wirral, last year and fell in love when they started chatting in a communal area over a jigsaw.

Joe lost his partner of 22 years Margaret, in July 2018, and had recently moved into the sheltered housing development.

Rachel was married to her husband Anthony for 41 years before he died in December 2016.

Joe popped the question to Rachel with a diamond ring on Valentine’s day this year. The wedding took place at Bromborough Methodist Church on Saturday in an intimate ceremony with their loved ones.

‘We found out that we had common ground because both our partners had recently died, but we also enjoyed singing, dancing, and going to church so it all fell into place.’

‘I’d describe our relationship as beautiful because we just get on so well and we are both very much in love,’ added Joe.

‘I got down on one knee with a ring and asked Rachel to marry me – she said yes, and that it was what she had been waiting for.’

The newlyweds are soon to be jetting off on honeymoon to Eastbourne, West Sussex, and have also planned holidays to Blackpool, Ireland, the Isle of Wight and Scotland.

‘I’d say go for it if the opportunity to find new love at a later age presents itself,’ said Rachel.

‘You never know what might happen, and in our case it’s ended up so lovely and we’re very happy.’

Thanks to Rachel and Joe we all believe in happy endings.
