Save your cash before Christmas by making your kid’s costume for their nativity — plus win £50,000 in our raffle – The Sun

WITH nativity plays on the horizon, you might worry kids’ costumes cost myrrh than you can afford.

Ready-made fancy dress outfits will set you back at least a tenner and if you have more than one child, it soon adds up.

So I put my elf’s hat on to come up with DIY costumes for less.

That’ll save you enough dosh for a well-deserved drink afterwards . . .

MARY AND JOSEPH: For Joseph, pick up Dunelm’s two-pack of brown pillowcases, £5.99. If you have got a little Mary, Matalan has £5 blue cases. Turn one into a tunic by cutting holes through the sides and top. Need it longer? Sew or safety pin the second to the hem and hide the stitches with a belt.  For the headpiece, fold an an old white pillowcase and secure with an elastic headband, £1 at Sainsbury’s.

ANGEL: A white dress can make up the main part of this outfit. If not, fold Ikea’s £2.50 sheet in half and cut a line in the fold for your child’s head. For wings, paint an old cardboard box with Wilko’s white acrylic paint, £1, and decorate with B&M’s £1 silver tinsel. Fix around the chest with Hobbycraft’s £1.10 white elastic.  Wrap more tinsel around Hobbycraft’s £1 pipe cleaner to create a halo, before gluing to Superdrug’s £1.39 Alice band.

SHEPHERD: Fashion a tunic out of Argos’s £2.50 cream pillowcases. Then, wrap Dunelm’s £1.50 striped tea towel over your child’s head and fix with the Sainsbury’s headband I mentioned earlier. For the shepherd’s cane, Sellotape Wilko’s £1 brown wrapping paper around an umbrella.

STAR: First off, get H&M’s black leggings, £2.99, and black T-shirt, £2.99. Create a sandwich-board effect by cutting an old cardboard box into two stars and covering with Wilko’s gold foil wrap, £2. Tie the pieces together with Hobbycraft’s £1 gold satin ribbon.

KING: Get your kid to wear their brightest trousers and T-shirt, then add a dressing gown. If you need one, eBay has them for £5.95.  Craft a crown out of an old cereal box, spraying with Wilko’s gold paint, £1.50, and bejewelling with Hobbycraft’s £1 gems.
