Supermarket giant Tesco has announced the creation of 16,000 new jobs across the UK as its online business surges in popularity. The coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown saw Britons in their droves take to ordering groceries online.
Tesco more than doubled its delivery customers since the start of March from 600,000 at the start of the pandemic to 1.5 million now.
Tesco has said the recruitment drive will include 10,000 roles for pickers as well as 3,000 delivery drivers.
Pickers select items from around stores for customer orders.
The supermarket will also hire staff for a range of other roles across its stores and distribution centres in the coming weeks and months.

Tesco said the 16,000 new jobs are in addition to the approximately 4,000 permanent jobs which were already created since the start of the pandemic.
Jason Tarry, chief executive officer of Tesco UK and ROI, said: “Since the start of the pandemic, our colleagues have helped us to more than double our online capacity, safely serving nearly 1.5 million customers every week and prioritising vulnerable customers to ensure they get the food they need.
“These new roles will help us continue to meet online demand for the long term, and will create permanent employment opportunities for 16,000 people across the UK.”
The retailer said it expects the majority of these roles to be filled by staff who have joined Tesco temporarily in recent months.
Around 47,000 temporary staff joined Tesco at the peak during the pandemic, however many of these roles have since ended.
Tesco said roles will first be offered to temporary staff still with the business, with remaining vacancies then recruited externally.

At the time of writing there are 1,395 jobs available on the Tesco careers site.
There are a range of roles being advertised, from customer assistant to store manager, personal shopper to warehouse operative.
These roles are a mixture of temporary and permanent jobs, as well as options for full and part-time hours.
How much does Tesco pay an hour?
Currently, Tesco pays an hourly rate of £9 for all workers.
However, this will rise in October 2020 by 3.3 percent.
This means on October 4, 2020, pay rates will rise to £9.30.
The pay increase has been decided in conjunction with workers’ union Usdaw and elected colleague representatives.
Tesco said it focused on what its colleagues have said is most important to them which is a guaranteed and higher basic hourly rate.
