Sinks should stay relatively clean, whether in use or not, as people can risk several unpleasant drainage issues. Depending on the material, people may end up with hefty repair costs. People will also discover many of the things they currently empty into the sink shouldn’t be anywhere near it.

Fat

Fat and oil which runs down the sink, whether excessive or not, can cause blockages.

When oils run down the sink, they can cause what experts term “fatbergs”.

They cause significant blockages, which people can avoid by pouring cooking oil and fat into foil before binning it.

Coffee grounds

People may opt to pout the remnants of their coffee down the plughole, but this is a big no-no.

Coffee grounds aren’t small enough to pass through the draining system, and like fat, will clog it up.

Plumbers have long identified them as one of the most common causes of blockages.

Cleaning products

One of the ways to solve a sink blockage is by using the correct products.

The harshest chemicals like bleach and ammonia have no place in the sink, however, as they can contaminate the water.

People should call their local hazardous waste disposal centre if they want to get rid of these substances.

Flour

People tend to leave utensils encased in flour or dough in the sink to soak before washing.

But this is something to avoid, as flour expands in contact with water and will clog the drain.

The best way to dispose of flour is by pouring it into the bin.

Paint

Budding artists will need a place to wash their supplies.

But non-specialised sinks aren’t the place to do this, as they can cause the same issues as disposing of cleaning products.

Whether oil or water-based, they can also cause water supply contamination regardless of pipe condition.
