Woman, 50, transforms from 'rank' Grandma to Glam-ma in just SIX WEEKS

Woman, 50, who avoided family photos because she was embarrassed of her looks is unrecognisable after £14,000 makeover, including Botox, veneers and a wardrobe revamp

  • Kirsti Davies, 50, from Andover, was embarrassed about how she looked
  • She was particularly self-conscious about her ‘broken and chipped’ teeth
  • Daughters put her forward for a £14,000 makeover contest, which she won
  • She was given veneers, a new wardrobe and Botox as part of her transformation

A mother who avoided family photos and stopped going out because she was so embarrassed of her appearance is unrecognisable after a £14,000 makeover.

Kirsti Davies, 50, from Andover, lost her husband of 20 years to cancer during lockdown last year and was devastated not to have many photographs of them smiling together that she could look back on and show her grandchildren.

Speaking exclusively to FEMAIL, the mother-of-five, who is also ‘Nan’ to 14 grandchildren, explained how she would avoid snaps because of her lack of confidence which was mostly due to her ‘awful, broken and chipped’ teeth.

Over time, her five daughters watched her withdraw from socialising, lose interest in attending family events and become less confident, so they decided to enter her into a national makeover competition led by Dental Concepts, worth over £14,000.

To their delight, she won and after a six-week transformation – which included veneers, teeth whitening, Botox, spa treatments, plus a new wardrobe of clothes and shoes – Kirsti now has the confidence to smile and be in family photos again.

Kirsti explained that ever since her teeth started going bad when she was growing up, her confidence began to go, too.

‘I think more of it is psychological but how can you change that?’ she said. ‘I hated my smile, declined photos and declined living the way I wanted because I ended up a shadow of hurt and hiding. I didn’t want people to see how bad I had got.’

The mother-of-five went on to recall one particularly hurtful comment when a child described her teeth as ‘rank’ when she was picking her granddaughter up from school.

‘I was picking my granddaughter Larnie up from preschool one day, stood outside waiting for her to come out and a small child smiled at me,’ Kirsti explained.

‘So I did what came naturally and smiled back, but I was greeted with a horrid look and a statement which made me feel like I wanted the ground to swallow me up.

‘He said “your teeth are rank!” I didn’t know what to say or do. I closed my mouth and looked away. Other parents were staring.

Kirsti recalled how a child once described her teeth (pictured) as ‘rank’ when she was picking up her granddaughter from school

‘Larnie came out of school so happy with a picture in hand for me, but I couldn’t even bring myself to greet her properly, or to smile at the picture she had done.

‘I scurried away as quick as I could – lost for words, full of emotion and quite frankly hurt.

‘Once I got Larnie home, I went home and sobbed. My German Shepherd dog was beside himself seeing me so upset so we ended up cuddling on my bedroom floor.’

Speaking of the child’s hurtful comment, Kirsti added: ‘I don’t think he intended on being so rude and nasty. I just think children have no filter and say things how they see them. But it did hurt, still to this day it hurts.’

The makeover package Kirsti received ranged from teeth, skin, aesthetics, nutrition, hair, makeup, nails, plus a new wardrobe of clothes and shoes, topped with a professional photoshoot. Pictured, after the six-week transformation

Kirsti’s lack of confidence in her appearance – including her teeth – also resulted in her missing family photo opportunities – something which she now regrets after her husband suddenly passed away in lockdown.

‘My husband and I were very quiet, private people,’ she explained. ‘We didn’t have many photos together. It was due to confidence issues with me I guess and Gareth was always working all of the hours he could to support me and our girls.

‘But yes, it hurts. It’s shocking. Photos are so precious now so the ones I do have are treasured. All pictures have a story behind them, I just wish I had evidence of more of our stories. It is sad that our girls and grandchildren barely had any photos of us.’

Not wanting to watch their mother struggle with her confidence any longer, or avoid future family photo opportunities, her daughters decided to enter her into a £14,000 makeover competition.

Kirsti’s middle daughter Karina, 31 years old, explained: ‘Our Mum has always been self-conscious of her smile. She doesn’t like showing her teeth.

‘Mum over the years has not had it easy with having five girls, losing both her parents at a young age, and then only last year lost her husband, my dad, her soul mate.’

AND FINALLY A PHOTOSHOOT

Finishing off with a professional photoshoot worth over £500, celebrity photographer, David Wheeler wanted to ensure that Kirsti had photos of her experience to look back on.

‘For me it was great to see how she truly transformed over the 6-week period,’ he explained. ‘There was a clear, newfound confidence within her with helped her shine in front of the camera and was an absolute joy to shoot.’

Kirsti’s younger daughter Kandice, 30, added: ‘We wanted to nominate mum because she has always put everyone first throughout her entire life. She has been through some really tough times, and she deserves happiness.

‘She has wanted her teeth done for quite some time, and I feel this would really give her the boost.’

Luckily, Kirsti’s wishes were to be answered when she won the national make over competition – and when the winners were announced in August she was over the moon.

‘I had to pinch myself when one of my daughters told me I’d won the contest. It was a shock,’ she said.

The Make Over Competition was the idea of Dr Manish Chitnis, Practice Owner at Dental Concepts.

He said: ‘The last year has been traumatic for many people and we wanted to celebrate our 10-year anniversary by giving back, by giving someone the reason to smile. I wanted it to be more than a smile makeover, I wanted to be able to offer someone a complete lifestyle makeover.’

Prior to the makeover Kirsti had not visited the dentist for around 15 years. Dr Manish Chitnis, and his team used the latest Digital Smile Design computer technology for the teeth transformation.

Kirsti underwent around 15 hours of treatment spread over several days with a full mouth rehabilitation involving upper and lower teeth.

‘We firstly administered Kirsti with our Porcelain Veneers, which was followed up with teeth whitening, cosmetic fillings and dental hygiene treatments,’ he added.

Kirsti also visited the team at RKB Medical Aesthetics and was treated by Dr Rory Boud, Aesthetic Medical Doctor.

‘We started Kirsti off with all-round subtle Botox for wrinkle relaxation, after that we gave her some skin boosters to revive the skin before using some dermal filler to give subtle volume and create a fresh appearance,’ he explained.

‘Our aim was to enhance her natural beauty to achieve a fresh, rejuvenated, look.

To compliment her new youthful look, Kirsti was also booked in to meet with international celebrity hairstylist & founder of HNB Salon Spa & Marie Claire Jet Style, Stephanie Stevenson.

‘To help soften up the face and add to her new youthful look we re-coloured the hair with multi tonal blends and created depth and lightness matching in the tone with the flecks in her eyes,’ she said. Creating a new “French girl fringe” was really the only dramatic reshaping required. It was an honour to work with Kirsti on her emotional journey to finding herself again.’

An event to reveal her before and after pictures took place on Thursday evening, and her daughters paid tribute to their mum as they stepped on stage to read out their original application letter, tugging the heartstrings of the audience.

‘We all think Mum looks phenomenal, and you can tell in her step she feels better inwardly and outwardly,’ Karina said, after the event.

‘We’re so pleased for her. When they put the before photo up on stage and she came out, you could hear the gasps around us, followed by tears, but they were happy tears, it was just so overwhelming. We still can’t believe it.

‘We would like to thank all the treatment salons and practitioners and organisers involved – they have all played their part in Mum’s amazing makeover, she looks beautiful.’

‘Mum is a new person and in the last 6 weeks we’ve seen her confidence return. It so great to see my Mum, really smile again, thank you.’

Meanwhile, Kirsti has praised the transformation for helping her ‘gain confidence’ and said she feels like she has a ‘spring’ back in her step again.

‘I used to be so outgoing,’ she explained. ‘I used to work and meet different clients to clean their houses. I missed going out – even just popping to the shop became hard but I now go with a smile.

‘Times I’ve missed I cannot get back but I can create fun days. I feel I have better control of my future.

‘I will live life to the fullest. The world is now my oyster.

‘My Next step is to get back to work. I want to show off my smile and show people I’m back and not hiding any more.
