Corrie legend Charlie Lawson heartbroken after dog Rex dies in his arms

Coronation Street star Charlie Lawson has been left devastated after his dog Rex died in his arms.

The Jim McDonald favourite said goodbye to the chocolate Labrador on Monday.

The 61-year-old actor posted an emotional message on Twitter letting fans know the awful news.

Northern Irishman Charlie, who has two other dogs, wrote: "My heart is busted. Rex died in my arms yesterday morning.

"To all folk out there going through losing a brother, for that’s what he was, smile soon. Xxx."

Fans rushed to offer their condolences, with one writing: "Lost my old pal not so long ago, so feel your pain."

One soap fan put: "The greatest curse in having a beloved dog is we know we will surely outlive them. But they don't know that. And they never complain. In time, get a new pup, I guarantee from experience it is the right thing to do, once you're ready."

A third wrote: "I’m so sorry. I lost my best friend recently too."

A fourth told him: "Charlie, I'm absolutely devastated for you. We've got chocolate labs and they're not pets, they're family. Unless you're a dog owner, you'll not understand how you feel about them and love you unconditionally."

Last week the star was criticised over comments he made on a radio show about Covid restrictions.

He was met with an angry response from some after saying he would not go back to wearing a mask after June 21.

He said he would not comply "irrespective of the unfortunate population who are vulnerable".

His comments, posted on Twitter in a clip by talkRADIO, were met by criticism.

One said: "A washed up actor's view is ok if it agrees with the station and Talking Heads' view. Not really avalanches view."

Another asked: "Can we see his scientific qualifications or PHD?"

A third joked: "I take it Mr Blobby wasn't available for comment."
