Shortly after the disgraced comedian, who admitted to sexual misconduct in 2017, was announced as a winner, many critics on social media likened his win to Will Smith‘s Best Actor award from Oscars.
“So much for ‘cancel culture.’ Apparently you can just do whatever you want if you’re famous,” one social media user tweeted. “Louis CK, who masturbated in front of women without consent, then had their careers derailed, just won Best Comedy Album at the Grammys,” a separate person added, “We are nowhere close to a reckoning on sexual misconduct, even just in the narrow slice of professional contexts.”
Another Twitter user who was disgusted over Louis’ win opined, “Louis CK just won a whole ass Grammy while y’all are either calling for Will Smith’s head or crying about cancel culture. There are no consequences for white cishet men.” One critic added, “I don’t want to hear anything else about Will Smith now that Louis C.K. not only was nominated but just won an award #GRAMMYs. Don’t anyone complain about cancel culture ever again.”
” ‘Cancel culture’ seems pretty selective, hmm?” wrote Sarah Ann Masse, one of the more than 80 women who accused disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. “And thanks so much to our industry for once again telling us that survivors don’t matter.”
During an interview with TheWrap last November, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. defended the organization’s decision to grant people like Louis a nomination, explaining that it won’t “restrict” the people who submit their work for consideration. “We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work eligible based on date and other criteria,” Harvey told the outlet. “If it is, they can submit for consideration.”
Back in 2017, Louis addressed his sexual misconduct in a statement, noting that he’s “remorseful” of his actions and trying to learn from his mistakes. “Now I’m aware of the extent of the impact of my actions,” he stated at the time, adding that “the hardest regret to live with is what you’ve done to hurt someone else. And I can hardly wrap my head around the scope of hurt I brought on them.” The comedian concluded that he’d “step back and take a long time to listen.”
Louis’ Grammys win came just days after Oscars fans were left stunned when Will stormed onstage to slap presenter Chris Rock for making a “G.I. Jane” joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia. Following the awkward confrontation, Will accepted the award for Best Actor for his performance in “King Richard“, which later sparked debate as well.
