Antiques Road Trip experts Izzie Balmer and Charlie Ross visited Surrey in an episode of the BBC show that aired earlier this year. The pair were on the hunt for treasured finds that would make them a profit at auction. However, both experts were left gobsmacked by the final price of Izzie’s diamond and sapphire necklace.

Izzie wasn’t sure whether the necklace contained both diamonds and a sapphire at first but once the stones had been confirmed, she admitted she was looking for a big sale from the £25 item.

As the auction began, Izzie announced: “I have high hopes.”

Initially disappointed with the bidding, she remarked: “£28 for a diamond?”

“Look, look, look,” Charlie urged when the prize reached £40. “Izzie, it’s a profit.”

“He’s going like the clappers, they’re exploding into action all of these online bidders,” Charlie added.

When the bidding reached £80, Charlie couldn’t bear the pressure and covered his eyes.

The bidding slowed down once the item had reached £95 but Izzie was eager for more.

“Can we get £100? Come on,” she remarked before the auctioneer brought the bidding to a close at £95.

Once all of Izzie and Charlie’s items had been sold, the pair received their total earnings.

Izzie’s earnings had dropped from £301.06 at the start of the day to £289.88 while Charlie’s increased from £191.44 to £250.10.

Earlier in the programme, Izzie explained why she was drawn to the necklace.

Spotting the item in an antique shop, she said: “This is absolutely gorgeous, this is 100 percent my cup of tea.

“It’s an Edwardian necklace and it’s in a style that we La Belle Epoque.

“I just love the elegance of something like this. I love the Edwardian period they were so glamorous, they were so elegant.”

“Think of Rose from the Titanic wearing something as fabulous as this,” Izzie added.

The necklace was prized at £35 but the Antiques Road Trip expert aimed to get a discount.

Studying the item more carefully, she said: “These stones are a little bit sparkly and I’m hoping there’s something else.

“I can’t say for sure but I think they might be diamonds,” Izzie revealed. “Without a diamond tester, the only way to know for sure is to look at the girdle because diamond is the only stone that has what is called a bruted girdle and it’s by polishing a diamond against another diamond.”

“You get this sort of matt, slightly dimpled finish. If they’re diamonds it would suggest they’re sat in platinum, not in silver and then we come to this stone at the bottom,” Izzie said.

The expert noted she was uncertain about the larger pink stone and needed to study it closer.

Antiques Road Trip airs on BBC One on weekdays at 4.30pm.
