Antiques Roadshow guest overwhelmed as he finds out value of late fathers Rolex

Antiques Roadshow: Rolex watch is valued

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left in tears after discovering his late dad’s Rolex is worth a whopping amount.

The man, joined by his family, presented the beautiful watch to expert Richard Price, explaining that his father had bought it in 1972 for £132 and still had the original invoice and two straps.

“It means absolutely everything to me, it’s part of my dad. Very, very special watch that is, and it will be forever,” he shared, with his family supporting him.

Richard described the timepiece as a “lovely watch” and revealed that even the straps alone are worth a good deal of money.

Richard explained that the Submariner model was introduced in 1967 and had its model name written in red, which is why collectors today call it the ‘Red Submariner’.

He explained: “Nine or 10 years later, all that writing was in white. Watch collectors, particularly Rolex collectors, are really pedantic. Within those 10 years, this watch was made with six different types of dials.

“But the important thing to see is to see that yours has feet first, the first three dials it was metres first, and we refer to those as marks one, two, three. Yours is a mark four dial.”

“With a receipt and the straps, it’s going to be around the £20,000 mark,” Richard confirmed.

The man was understandably emotional upon realising the value of his father’s cherished watch and was momentarily speechless.

He later added: “My dad, he loved this programme and he would have loved to see his watch on here but he wouldn’t have cared what it was worth.”

The gentleman was tearful after finding out the staggering value, and viewers at home were more than moved.

One wrote: “The chap with his Dad’s Rolex got me too #antiquesroadshow,” accompanied by a crying face emoji.

Another person tweeted: “The emotion of the guy knowing how much his late father’s Rolex is worth and his son’s face seeing his dad react like that is proper #antiquesroadshow.”
