After over a decade as Iron Man in the MCU, Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark bowed out with a sacrificial death in Avengers Endgame – a scene that has gone down as one the biggest blockbuster moments in decades. Yet now as the franchise has embraced time travel and the multiverse, surely the character can come back in some form? The Marvel star himself had previously admitted reluctance but one thing would bring him back.
Downey Jr was asked previously by Joe Rogan on his podcast: “Is the door to Iron Man totally closed because I don’t believe it is? You guys can go through time now. You’ve already opened up that door.”
At first, the Iron Man star replied: “Let me ask you a question. If I pick the jersey back up and put it on, wouldn’t you feel a little bit like, ‘oh craaap.’
However, the podcast comedian enthused: “No. Here’s what I think, they go through a few semi-lacklustre Avengers movies without you. Ready for this? Here’s the scene: There’s a moment where the world’s fate is at stake and they’ve realised they need a super genius. Then, they figure out how to restart that time machine…come on man. The audience sees you when you step out of that thing. The way people would freak out if you came back. Come on man. Think about it. Take a few years off. Do a few Doctor Dolittes, a couple more Sherlock Holmes.”
At the time, Downey Jr replied: “To me, starting up again is off the table. I feel like I’ve done all I could with that character.” But, he added: “There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious…But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff…We all have to do what [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin Feige says.”
According to a reliable Marvel leaker, bringing back his Iron Man for Avengers Secret Wars is exactly what the MCU chief has planned.
The MCU is currently in its Multiverse Saga which will conclude with a two part Avengers extravaganza just as the Infinity Saga did.
These confirmed movies are 2025’s Avengers: The King Dynasty and 2026’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
Asked if it was true that Disney are planning on bringing back Downey Jr’s Iron Man in both films, respected Marvel leaker MyTimeToShineHello replied simply on Twitter: “Secret Wars yes, Kang Dynasty no.”
This makes sense given that Secret Wars is the Multiverse Saga’s Endgame and given that there are also rumours of Chris Evans’ Captain America returning for the epic too, nothing could be more perfect to see Tony again too.
Presumably, these will be variants or time travelling versions of Iron Man and Captain America, but seeing them join a final battle in Secret Wars would be a great way of sending fans wild.
On top of this, the leaker has teased that Tony’s daughter Morgan, who was just five in Endgame will return too.
They tweeted, “Adult Morgan Stark will return and in a big way”, and quoted Tony’s monologue at the end of the movie, “The epic forces of dark and light that have come into play. And for better or worse, that’s the reality Morgan’s gonna have to find a way to grow up in.”

Avengers 5 The Kang Dynasty, Avengers 6 Secret Wars titles explained [AVENGERS 5]
Katherine Langford played an adult Morgan Stark in a deleted scene of Avengers Endgame after Tony made his sacrificial snap, in which she spoke with her father in the Soul Realm.
If the rumour is true then presumably she’ll be back to play Iron Man’s daughter once again and hopefully, this time won’t be left on the cutting room floor.
Avengers The Kang Dynasty hits cinemas on May 2, 2025 and will be followed by Avengers Secret Wars on May 5, 2026.
