BBC Breakfasts Naga Munchetty fiercely shuts down MP during heated debate

Naga Munchetty fiercely shut down Ben Wallace during a heated debate over the Conservative Leader race on BBC Breakfast.

On Friday’s (July 29) visit to the BBC studio, the 47-year-old welcomed viewers back onto the sofa alongside her co-host Charlie Stayt to talk about the latest headlines in the news.

One of the biggest stories this week is the continued race for the Conservative Leader position as Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak continue to battle it out for the top spot as the next Prime Minister.

Earlier this week, the Defence Secretary put his full support behind the Liz and the broadcaster was sure to grill him about his decision to support the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs on the show.

It’s fair to say the pair locked horns in the heated debate as the MP battled his way through her persistent questioning about whether Ukraine would still have the UK’s support with Rishi Sunak in Downing Street.

She asked: “Is the support for Ukraine going to be diminished, in your opinion?”

Ben initially attempted to dodge the question, stating: “I think you have to ask Rishi Sunak that”

It was at this point that the newsreader pushed for a straight answer from him, insisting: “No, I’m asking you opinion as Defence Secretary and someone who’s put their support behind someone who’s opposing Rishi Sunak.”

The politician was seen fidgeting in his chair during her interrogation and had clearly grown frustrated with her consistent line of fire about his opposing opinions of the former Chancellor of the Exchequer.

He stammered: “You keep wanting me to spend lots of time focusing on Rishi. As I've said, Rishi is a talented individual who would be good in anybody’s cabinet.

“One of the reasons I support Liz is the investment in the defence budget and defence capabilities that help Britain deliver stability and security around the world.”

Hundreds of viewers at home flooded to Twitter to praise the broadcaster on her fierce questions online.

One user penned: “#BBCBreakfast Perfect line of questioning from @TVNaga01 to #BenWallace.

“Highlighting Liz Truss’ lack of consistency & loyalty to the Johnson Government. Wallace, is one of the best at handling media interviews, is squirming & struggling to answer questions [applause emojis].”

Another agreed: “Nothing like watching Naga destroying MP’s to start your day [cry laughing emoji] #BBCBreakfast.”

A third pointed out: “Wallace is getting a thorough, uncomfortable grilling by Naga. #BBCBreakfast” as one viewer praised: “Go on Naga! Great questions. #BBCBreakfast.”
