Charity (played by Emma Atkins) has had a turbulent year on Emmerdale, what with her relationship with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) breaking down, her return to her criminal roots and falling in love with village bad boy, Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb). The pair have had a lot of ups and downs over the last few months on the ITV soap but it seems the festive season will see them in their best place yet. However, the iconic character is set to be given some news that could change her life forever and it seems she could be heading in the New Year with a tragic health diagnosis.

The drama begins after Christmas Day as Mackenzie and Charity seem to be enjoying their time together, much to the disgust of the latter’s son, Ryan Stocks (James Moore).

Feeling the happiest he has ever been, Mackenzie ends up telling his other half he has fallen head over heels in love with her.

He is left heartbroken when she doesn’t tell him the same thing but later, she will open up her heart and explain she is in love with him, too.

Unfortunately, their little bubble will be burst when the mother of four gets some news she really was expecting to hear heading into 2022.

Whatever the news is, it will begin a devastating sequence of events as the troubled character starts to go back into her shell.

Although it’s not been officially confirmed what the news is, it could be she will get a call from the hospital asking her to come and get some test results.

Some might think she would be pregnant with Mackenzie’s child but in fact, she could be told she needs urgent treatment following a health diagnosis.

As the mother of four realises her life could be cut short, she will try to deflect from the fact she is ill and instead, carry on with everyday life.

She would begin pushing away those closest to her as she is too proud to admit she is scared she only has a limited time left with them.

After recently telling Mackenzie she loves him, she could end their relationship and tell him she was lying about her feelings.

There’s probably further to fall

Known for being persistent, Mackenzie won’t take this admission lightly and will want to know what his other half is playing at.

As he begins to follow her every move, thinking she might have moved on with someone else, he could discover she is really ill.

Confronting her about his realisation, the stalwart could admit defeat and confess she is gravely ill and needs professional medical help.

Promising he will stick by her, Mackenzie could sit and wait with the beloved character as she undergoes treatment for her illness.

In this moment, Charity could realise she loves her partner more than anything in the world and she would be happy he happy is able to support her.

However, not wanting the rest of the family to find out, she could make Mackenzie promise not to spill the beans and keep quiet about her health diagnosis.

He could agree, knowing it’s what his girlfriend wants to hear but behind her back, he could inform her loved ones about what’s going on.

As Charity is suddenly flooded with visits from her family, who are scared and want to spend as much time with her as they can, she could question her relationship again.

Using any energy she has, the mother of four could rage at her boyfriend for breaking his promise and for breaking their trust.

Will she end their relationship for good this time as she knows there is no way back for them now?

Taking to Twitter, viewers have been reacting to Charity’s relationship with Mackenzie and how they feel about the pair being together.

Michelle wrote on the social media platform: “Watching lapdog Mack sucking up to Charity is so cringy #emmerdale.”

Mags added: “#Emmerdale Really wish Charity would stop that screechy shouting-it’s constant,” with Steve commenting: “Omg Charity can always make me laugh.”

Deluca remarked: “Think I preferred Mack when he was just talking about sex with Charity because this new one really making me cringe #Emmerdale.”

Tess shared: “Ugh – stop these two! Get Charity back with Vanessa, the way it’s supposed to be!”

Discussing her character’s relationship with Mackenzie, the actress who plays Charity, Emma, hinted this could be the love of her life.

The soap star explained: “I think it’s obvious that she finally found someone she could open up to and trust.

“It wasn’t about the financial game – she felt the money could buy her happiness but Vanessa was the proof that that isn’t the case.

“Happiness is as simple as loving someone and being loved back. She started seeing that and believed it but she messed up with Mack and that was the start of a downward spiral.

“Knowing Charity as well as I do, there’s probably further to fall,” she told Metro.co.uk but will she be able to redeem herself before it’s too late?

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode airing on Thursdays at 8pm.
