Riverdale teases tragic Betty twist in potentially deadly episode

Promo for Riverdale season 7 episode 5

Riverdale’s seventh and final season has seen Archie and the gang trapped in a mid-century nightmare – and the latest promo reveals some of them might not make it out alive.

The CW’s unpredictable young adult drama is fully underway with its final season, and fans have just been given a tantalising sneak peek at next week’s episode, Tales in a Jugular Vein.

A synopsis reads: “Principal Featherhead (played by Anthony Michael Hall) takes aim at the negative influence comic books have over kids.

“Just as Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) is tasked by Pep Comics to write four tales for a new issue.”

While the logline for Riverdale’s next wild instalment promises another nostalgic foray into Archie Andrews’ (KJ Apa) comic book beginnings, the trailer tells a very different tale.

In fact, new footage seems to suggest one of Jughead’s stories involves Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) luring Archie into a dark ritual.

In one scene, he’s seduced by his high school sweethearts Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) who are laying on red velvet and surrounded by candles.

“Come, Archie, join us,” they say in unison, and Archie cartoonishly shakes his head in disbelief.

However, his seven minutes in heaven soon takes a deadly turn when Betty collapses on the floor.

“Oh God, Betty!” Archie exclaims as Betty writhes in pain and foams at the mouth.

Archie’s girl-next-door apparently dies in unexplained circumstances, or at the very least is rendered unconscious.

The trailer ends with Veronica reacting to Jughead’s tale, as she responds: “Well, that was grotesque.”

However, the rules of Archie and his friend’s mysterious new surroundings are still unclear after the comet struck at the end of season six.

If Betty does indeed die in 1955, it could have huge ramifications on the real world.

Hopefully, her role isn’t axed from the rest of the season, but fans might have to prepare for Archie’s love interest to be out of action for some episodes.

Fans are still convinced Betty and Archie will end up together, but that could all change after next week’s episode.

Thankfully, the teaser and the title of the episode seem to suggest this will all be a fantasy concocted by Jughead for Pep Comics.

Even so, nothing is quite as it seems this season at Riverdale High, so does Betty have a challenging road ahead based on the latest gruesome twist?

Riverdale season 7 continues Wednesdays on The CW and the following Thursday on Netflix.
