Schmigadoon turned down Patti LuPone for being too old

Schmigadoon!: Season 2 Official Trailer

Broadway legend Patti LuPone has claimed she was turned down for a role in Schmigadoon! for being “too old”.

LuPone, 73, has had a long-standing career on the stage and screen, becoming a Broadway legend thanks to her roles in musicals including Gypsy, Company and Sunset Boulevard.

So she appeared to be a shoe-in for a cameo in Apple TV+’s Schmigadoon! – a love letter to theatre musicals and based in a magical world that captures different eras of theatre each season.

Even LuPone admits she adores the show, but has now revealed after reaching out to the show’s creators, they rejected her.

Speaking to Mashable, LuPone said: “I wanted to be in Schmigadoon! and I was too old.”

Asking to clarify the comment, she added: “Exactly what I said. We reached out to them and said, ‘I want to be in Schmigadoon!’ They said, ‘Sorry. You’re too old.'”

Express.co.uk has reached out to Apple for comment.

LuPone has taken the rejection like a champ, declaring it “their loss” though admitting it was “sad” she couldn’t get a part in the current season.

Season two is currently streaming weekly, and has been rebranded to Schmicago! to track a darker tale than the first.

Once again starring Keegan Michael-Key and Cecily Strong as couple Josh and Melissa, the pair find themselves in a new world when they attempt to return to Schmigadoon – a magical world they stumbled upon while trying to save their relationship.

Schmigadoon focused on the ‘Golden Era’ of musicals, with Brigadoon, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and Sound Of Music among the shows being parodied.

However, this time they find themselves Schmicago – a complicated cityscape with characters resembling that of Chicago, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd and Hair to name a few.

Now they need to figure out a murder mystery and a way to everyone’s happy ending in order to get back to reality.
