Star Wars: C-3PO star Anthony Daniels WON’T be returning for ‘very, very long time’

The third Star Wars trilogy was brought to an end last year with the arrival of The Rise of Skywalker. Disney found a dramatic and explosive end to the story for each of the characters, including new protagonist Rey Skywalker (played by Daisy Ridley), who set off to become her own, new style of Jedi. The future is uncertain for the franchise at the moment, as no new films have been announced just yet. But when they do happen, it seems like C-3PO might not be a part of it.

Anthony Daniels’ C-3PO was one of the first characters ever seen in the Star Wars canon.

Alongside his trusty pal R2-D2, he managed to deliver Princess Leia’s (Carrie Fisher) message to Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness), kickstarting the original trilogy’s events.

Since then, C-3PO has been a mainstay in the series, appearing in every mainline film so far.

Although the friendly robot’s memories were wiped during The Rise of Skywalker, they were later reinstated during the final scenes by R2-D2.

Despite this, Daniels has now spoken out about his future as the character.

The legendary actor recently appeared as C-3PO in the newly-released LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.

On if he would ever give up his spot as C-3PO in the future, Daniels confessed: “No, I’m never going to retire.

“They’re going to have to throw me out the door.”

Daniels then went on to reveal: “Life is not over. The films, may be taking a back seat for 3PO, for a very very long time, I would think.

“But there’s all sorts of other media, particularly now with digital formats, that I’m so happy, and grateful and proud to be part of.”

Fans of the franchise will surely agree that C-3PO is one of the integral parts of the series, so a film without 3PO would certainly be a tough pill to swallow.

It is more than likely that, considering the new films have not been announced just yet, C-3PO’s journey in the new films may not have been planned out either.

It was also recently revealed how George Lucas was being told his prequel trilogy would “destroy” the franchise.

In a new book called The Star Wars Archives, George Lucas is quoted in being told he was going to bring the series to an end in 1999 before The Phantom Menace was released.

The book reads: “You’re going to destroy the franchise, you’re going to destroy everything!”

This comment from 20th Century Fox deflated Lucas a little – but he was adamant that he was going to continue with his next trilogy of films.

According to the book, Lucas returned to Lucasfilm to speak to his staff.

Apparently the director said: “[I’m] making a film nobody wants to see, but I would rather do that than tell the same story over and over.”

The Phantom Menace, despite being critically panned, made over $1 billion at the box office.

The Star Wars films are available to watch on Disney Plus now.
