Yellowstone blunder: Fans expose huge continuity error as gunshot wound ‘disappears’

Yellowstone: Kayce and Monica clash over his job

Taylor Sheridan’s modern Western Yellowstone has become a surprise hit over the past few seasons thanks to its sharp scripts and impressive production value. Unfortunately, one observant viewer was distracted by a strange continuity slip-up in the first season.

Yellowstone’s first season seems to have fallen victim to an embarrassing continuity error during a pivotal action sequence.

In the show’s third episode, ‘No Good Horses’, Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) is forced to confront some unseemly intruders to protect his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill).

The episode packed an emotional punch, as this was the first time viewers found out what happened to Kayce, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) mother, Evelyn (Gretchen Mol).

However, the early instalment of the series was sidetracked when Kayce drove out to the desert and stumbled upon two meth cooks who had kidnapped a young girl.

Before giving chase, Kayce unknowingly leaves his son, Tate, to fend off a deadly rattlesnake after taking care of one of the cooks.

Meanwhile, Kayce pursues the remaining survivor, who had clearly been watching too much Breaking Bad and decided to park their operations a little too close to Dutton Ranch for Kayce’s liking.

He manages to land a couple of rounds on his target’s shoulder, before lassoing him to the ground, inadvertently killing him when he lands face first on a large rock.

Although the tense sequence kicked off the episode with a gripping showcase of Kayce’s skills, some fans couldn’t help but be distracted by some inconsistent gunshot wounds.

One viewer took to online forums when they spotted something strange happening with the victim’s t-shirt between shots.

They said: “[Kayce] is chasing after the guy in white. Right before he falls, the main character shoots him in the left shoulder. The mark disappears from his shirt after that.”

It’s a little hard to tell, as Kayce lands the shots when the guy briefly turns around to face him, and he is then only shot from the back.

However, this observant fan clearly found it strange that there was no semblance of blood or marks on the plain white shirt after the loyal Dutton pulled the trigger.

Sadly, this wasn’t the only mistake spotted during this early entry in Yellowstone’s first season, as another fan took issue with the show’s setting.

They wrote: “The intro takes place in March. The trees in the background say otherwise.

“In the mountains in March, leaves are usually not fully developed on trees until April at the earliest. The scene was likely shot in the fall.”

Sheridan and the production team were clearly still finding their footing throughout Yellowstone’s first season, as these continuity quibbles weren’t the only criticisms levelled at ‘No Good Horses’.

When the episode was recapped on Vulture, they complained: “So … what was up with that Kayce subplot?

“Kayce’s a likable character, well-played by Luke Grimes, but so far every time he appears in this show he’s stuck with the scraps of story ideas that Sheridan can’t seem to fit anywhere else.”

Thankfully, Yellowstone has only grown more popular and confident as the series goes on, and fans are expecting Taylor Sheridan to deliver the strongest outing yet when season four finally rolls around.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in 2021 on Paramount.
