‘Everyday I try and find something to lift my spirits’: Richard E. Grant shares sweet advice given by his late wife Joan Washington after an ‘absolutely brutal year’

Richard E. Grant shared an emotional video with fans on Twitter on Friday, urging them to ‘try and find something to lift their spirits’.

The Withnail And I star, 64, urged his followers to try and ‘beat Covid’ following an ‘absolutely brutal year,’ which saw his beloved wife Joan Washington pass away in September following a battle with lung cancer.

Richard said in the sweet clip: ‘Shortly before my wife died she challenged my daughter and I to try and be happy, everyday we have tried to find something to lift our spirits.’

He continued: ‘At the end of an absolutely brutal year. I hope you can do the same, wherever you are, beat Covid and everything that has been thrown at us. Have a great Friday.’

He captioned the video: ‘Something for the weekend… to you and yours!’

Richard’s wife was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer eight months before her death.

At the time he told The Daily Mail: ‘It’s an extraordinary phenomenon to be truly ‘seen’ and ‘known’ by another human, and in Joan, I found someone who innately did both.

So sad: The Withnail And I star revealed the advice he had been given by his late wife Joan Washington – who died in September following a battle with lung cancer

Richard said in the sweet clip: ‘Shortly before my wife died she challenged my daughter and I to try and be happy, everyday we have tried to find something to lift our spirits’

‘To have loved one another for almost four decades has been the ride of my lifetime.’

He said: ‘Since her stage four lung cancer diagnosis two days before Christmas, she was accepting, clear sighted, sanguine and totally without self pity.’

He continued: ‘It’s been my privilege to be by your side, sharing our last eight months together, enabling us to say everything we possibly wanted and needed to, so that when you asked Olivia and me two weeks ago ‘to let me go’, we unequivocally said ‘yes’.’

The couple met when Joan agreed to give Richard private voice lessons in 1982.

They married in 1986 and share a daughter, Olivia, 32, and a stepson, Tom, from Washington’s previous relationship.

It comes after Grant, who had been visiting his 90-year-old mother Leonne in southern Africa when the Government enforced new travel restrictions to fight the Omicron variant, got stuck in quarantine.

In now-deleted Tweets, he said he feels ‘punished’ after being forced to quarantine for Covid in a hotel that charges more than £228-per-night and serves ‘grim food’.

Grant posted pictures of a packaged tuna and cucumber sandwich, a sausage casserole and fish and chips, which he said would cost less than £30 to buy elsewhere.

Tough: Richard recently offered insight into his hotel quaranting after returning to the UK from South Africa, a country that had been placed on the red list

Speaking in a video posted online, Grant, who used to present the hotel review television series Richard E. Grant’s Hotel Secrets, said: ‘I went to southern Africa to visit my 90-year-old mother and got caught by the red region Covid restrictions.

‘I understand there are security costs in the hotel and you’ve got to pay for two Covid tests, but £228 a day to receive three meals of this very poor standard, in a supposed four-star Holiday Inn hotel, beggars belief.’

Grant said he was ‘confounded’ that a ‘non-quarantine Holiday Inn nearby costs £89 incl breakfast’ and asked: ‘How does Gov [ernment] justify this cost to a traveller for ‘hospitality’… feels punishing!’
