A dog who has had a really tough life got to experience pure joy as he raced across a remote beach off the coast of Scotland with his new loving family.
Lurcher Angus lost his eye sight and was left brain damaged after being abused by his previous owners.
But his new family Jon and Anne Ashmore took the rescue dog on a little trip away to the Outer Hebrides, and said he had the ‘time of his life’.
The couple, both 57 from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, adopted Angus from Radar Dog Rescue in Rotherham and vowed to give him a happy and safe life.
‘Sadly, Angus is blind and brain damaged as a result of neglect and abuse by his previous owners,’ says Anne.
‘He can be scared in busy places and nervous around other dogs so the beach was perfect for him to relax and he had the space to really enjoy himself.
‘The beauty and tranquillity of the area allowed him to have the best holiday we could have imagined for him.’
A heartwarming video shows Angus splashing in the shallow waters and racing and leaping through the sand on Luskentyre and Eoropie beaches on the Isles of Harris and Lewis.
The couple adopted Angus around two years ago, but they filmed his love for the sea air and sand between his paws when they went on holiday just last week.
They captured Angus’ happiness and shared the clip in a local community group, saying how glad they were they had visited the area.
‘We wanted to take him somewhere he could just run free and have fun,’ adds Anne.
‘The beach was ideal as it was so quiet and such a wide open space, we didn’t have to worry about him having an accident.’
At home, Anne says Angus is the perfect companion. As a result of the way he was previously treated, Angus suffers from seizures and has to take tablets every day.
‘We hide them in his sausages,’ says Anne.
‘He is nervous which is to be expected after his horrible start to life. But he really is the sweetest boy and he adores our granddaughter.
‘Our daughter Becky also has a blind Lurcher, so we have experience of their needs and we were happy to give him a loving forever home.’
The couple say Radar dog rescue is ‘incredible’, and that they are so grateful to them for saving little Angus.
‘Despite his loss of sight, he has incredible hearing and sense of smell. He barks at noises before we even hear them,’ says Anne.
‘He does bump into things in the house but he has adapted really well and when we are out on walks, if we come to a step, we shout and he knows to lift his legs up.
‘He has a good bond with us now. We don’t know how long we will have him for so we are determined to give him plenty of happy times and experiences.
‘The beach is his happy place. The joy on his face is priceless.’
