Help hospitality bounce back by snapping up one of a MILLION new jobs

LOOKING for work? Apply to help the hospitality industry bounce back.

One in three firms did not have enough staff to cope with reopening as lockdown eased this week — putting the nation’s economic recovery at risk.

Pubs, hotels and restaurants are all struggling to recruit workers, with more than a MILLION jobs now up for grabs.

Big names including Compass Group, Odeon and InterContinental Hotels are all searching for recruits at the moment.

Nine in ten businesses are finding it hard to fill basic jobs such as bartending and table service, according to a study from hospitality charity Springboard.


But a new survey by recruitment app Placed finds that three in five job-hunters believe there is a stigma attached to working in hospitality, while 38 per cent are concerned that the wages will not be high enough.

Placed CEO Jennifer Johansson said: “The hospitality sector should be the cornerstone of the UK’s economic recovery. But attitudes towards the sector need to change.

“We need to rebrand the sector, stop relying on foreign workers and get Brits into these jobs.”

It's all in the team building

NINE in ten workers would consider staying with a firm which invests in training its staff.

This week is Learning At Work Week, and here, Laura Coleman, Head of Learning and Development at Sodexo Engage, reveals her tips . . . 

  1. Design a learning journey. It’s vital to move away from a one-off session and make learning and development a continuous journey. Instead of a single training session in a classroom with no follow-up, plan pre- and post-workshop activities, digital learning, on-the-job coaching and shorter, skills-based workshops.
  2. Focus on upskilling. Offering staff this not only supports their ambitions, but wider company success. Digital skills are becoming increasingly important in every sector.
  3. Develop your managers. Middle managers have a direct line of communication with employees but often lack training. Provide regular development to both new and existing managers to ensure they are fully equipped with the right tools.
  4.  Ensure staff have a say. While employers may think they know what staff want and need, there is no better way to make sure than opening lines of communication. Ask for regular feedback from staff, about their ambitions.

Find jobs for others

WANT to help others get back to work? Then join the employability industry.

The sector encompasses thousands of support organisations which help often the most disadvantaged jobseekers find work placements, training and jobs.

Industry body the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) estimates that more than 20,000 extra front-line employment advisers will be needed this year.

CEO Elizabeth Taylor said: “Employability is a hidden industry – an area you might know little about unless you’ve had first-hand experience of unemployment.

"Our sector has a breadth of roles to be filled, from front-line advisers, trainers and youth workers to wellbeing professionals, admin and IT staff.

“The sector offers fulfilling roles, professional career development and also accreditations.”

The international camper van hire firm has launched a fast-track grad programme.

Fifteen candidates will join the team as junior associates on a nine-month, full-time, paid contract designed to accelerate professional growth.

The top performers will then receive a job offer for the HQ team based in Lisbon, Portugal.
