Captain America Wyatt Russell Says Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan Just 'Lie About Each Other'

In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell portrays the new Captain America — a morally questionable and arrogant stand-in who has no right wielding the shield or following in the righteous footsteps of Steve Rogers. During an interview with SiriusXM, Russell spoke about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe opposite Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, noting what it’s like to work with the duo.

Wyatt Russell talks about Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s rapport on and off the set of ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’

When asked what the dynamic is between the cast off-screen, Wyatt shared:

“Anthony and Sebastian just go on news programs and lie about each other, I think. They try to come up with who can tell the crazier lie about the other that the world will believe. And I think that it is an amazing thing that has taken on a life of its own.”

Mackie and Stan definitely boast a humorous off-screen friendship — one that’s likely a bit less combative (in a serious manner) than their on-screen one. Russell went on to explain what it was like the first time he met Mackie.

Russell talks about meeting Anthony Mackie

Russell recalled the first time he met Mackie at D23. Mackie knew exactly how to operate in the setting, but Russell was lost. He said:

“I remember Anthony, the first time I met Anthony was at D23, which is like the Disney convention…you know, presenting the show…and you come out on stage and wave. I was totally lost. No idea what I was doing. Ushered around. And, you know, they’re much more seasoned at being in the MCU, so they know what to say, what not to say.”

Russell went on to note that while he was busy trying to make it through the convention, Mackie was working to convince Stan to take his shirt off during an interview. He said:

“…I don’t even know why I’m there. Not only can I not answer the questions because that’s when I had no idea, like any information to answer any question…so any question I was asked, I really honestly, truly had no idea. So, I was observing their relationship, and Anthony just kept telling Sebastian to take his shirt off in this interview. And, I was like, oh my god, what have I gotten myself into? As soon as he gets to know me like I’m toast.

Russell explained that you “get to know Anthony very well” when working with him on a project. He complimented the man for one of “the greatest senses of humor,” and explained that he’s a “personable” guy. Sebastian Stan is “great to talk to” explained Russell, and they have had some really solid conversations so far.
