Doc Martin ending after 16 years as series 10 confirmed to be its last

Doc Martin is ending after 16 years.

ITV has announced that Martin Clunes’ grump doctor is hanging up his stethoscope after 10 series, with the upcoming series confirmed as its last.

In a joint statement, star Clunes and writer Philippa Braithwaite said: ‘We have loved making nine series of Doc Martin.  When we launched the series in 2004 we could never have imagined how much our loyal viewers would take to the grumpy Doc like they have.  The series has avid fans both in the UK and throughout the world and we are thrilled that Doc Martin has topped the ratings every time.

‘However, after sixteen years we now feel that the time has come to say goodbye to Portwenn.  We will be making the tenth and final series in 2021 and we are very much looking forward to returning to Cornwall to film it.’

ITV’s head of drama Polly Hill said: ‘I just want to thank Martin and Philippa and everyone involved in Doc Martin, because it’s a brilliant, beautifully made series that has delighted audiences for many years. I am pleased that we are making series 10, and sad this will be the last, but respect their decision to bring it to a close.’

Series 10 will begin filming in spring 2021, and will air on ITV later that year.

Doc Martin, created by Dominic Minghella, began way back in 2004, and stars Clunes as cantankerous Dr Martin Ellingham, who moves his life to the sleepy Cornish town of Portwenn to be the village’s GP.

Despite his lack of social skills and appalling bedside manner, Doc Martin gained the respect of the villagers over the series thanks to his expert skills as a diagnostician and his reactions to emergencies.

And during his time in Portwenn, he found love with Louisa, played by Caroline Catz.

The show also stars Ian McNeice, Joe Absolom, Selina Cadell and Eileen Atkins.

Doc Martin has been a huge ratings success of ITV over the years, and bagged Clunes a best TV comedy actor award at the British Comedy Awards.

The actor could take home another gong for the show tonight, as he is up for best TV actor at the TV Choice Awards.
