Glenn Close Is Nominated for an Oscar and Razzie for Role in This Netflix Movie

Sometimes a role gets opposite reactions from different people. This year that’s the case for Glenn Close who is nominated for an Oscar and Razzie. This is the Netflix movie that had audiences and critics torn and her reaction to the nominations.

Glenn Close plays Mamaw in ‘Hillbilly Elegy’

The drama shows a Yale law student going home to Ohio after an urgent phone call from family saying his mother is in the hospital. He then revisits his family history going back three generations. The movie is based on a memoir with the same title by J.D. Vance.

Gabriel Basso stars in the movie as J.D. Vance, Amy Adams plays his mother, Bev, and Close played grandmother, Bonnie “Mamaw” Vance. The movie seems to be a polarizing one with audiences.

It has the score of 25% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but has an audience score of 85%. This polarizing reaction has continued into the award season.

Glenn Close was nominated for an Oscar and Razzie

Close is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. The other actors nominated are Maria Bakalova in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Olivia Colman in The Father, Amanda Seyfried for Mank, and Youn Yuh-jung in Minari.

The movie also got Oscar love by being nominated for makeup and hairstyling. But it also was nominated for multiple Razzies.

Close was nominated for Worst Supporting Actress in this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards for the same role. The other actors in the category are Lucy Hale in Fantasy Island, Maggie Q in Fantasy Island, Kristen Wiig in Wonder Woman 1984, and Maddie Ziegler in Music.

Close wasn’t the only one singaled out. Ron Howard was nominated for Worst Director and the movie is nominated for Worst Screenplay.

Other actors who have been nominated for both awards

Close isn’t the first actor to get praise and criticism for the same role. Amy Irving was nominated for both awards for her performance in Yentl in 1984. She didn’t win either award.

James Coco was also nominated for both awards for his performance in Only When I Laugh. He also didn’t win either award.

If history repeats itself, that could mean Close won’t win either award. So far she’s been nominated for eight Oscars and hasn’t won. Her last nomination was in 2019 for The Wife.

Close shared her reaction to both nominations with Today. “I’m so thrilled because to get a Razzie and an Oscar nomination in the same year, it’s pretty cool,” she said. “To still be in the room, to still have my work recognized by my peers, it’s thrilling to me.”
