Piers Morgan was "offered a job live on air" from Andrew Neil after his abrupt exit from ITV's Good Morning Britain.

The controversial television presenter quit GMB after he sparked outrage over his ferocious criticism of Meghan Markle.

ITV announced that Piers was leaving in a statement which read: "Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

"ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."

Andrew Neil has told the BBC Piers would be a good fit for new show GB news after his exit from GMB.

He said: "Well, Piers would be a huge asset to GB news and we'll definitely look at that.

"We haven't started any negotiations yet.

Neil confirmed he would not want to have Piers' GMB role transferred onto GB News, but said: "Could we find a role for Piers Morgan? Of course, we could – any network worth its salt could find a role for a broadcaster of his calibre."

GB news is a British news channel set to launch this year and Neil has confirmed the channel will launch sometime in March 2021.

Piers sparked outrage earlier this week as he accused Meghan Markle of lying during her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

During Meghan and Prince Harry's Oprah interview, Markle discussed her issues with mental health and revealed she had experienced suicidal thoughts.

Morgan said during Monday's programme: "I'm sorry, I don't believe a word she says.

"I wouldn't believe her if she read me a weather report."

Ofcom confirmed it is launching an investigation into GMB and ITV after receiving more than 41,000 complaints about Monday's show.

An Ofcom spokesperson said: "We have launched an investigation into Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules."

During Tuesday's episode of GMB, Morgan stormed off the ITV set mid-show following a heated discussion with his co-star Alex Beresford.

Alex branded Piers' behaviour "diabolical" and said the presenter had continued to "trash" Meghan Markle after she cut him off.

Piers then furiously stormed off set before returning to continue his dispute with the weatherman.

Ahead of Morgan's GMB departure, ITV's CEO Carolyn McCall reportedly told journalists that producers were 'dealing with Piers' following his outbursts this week.
